Downgrade PSP firmware

As was likely to happen, some enterprising individuals have managed to produce a working downgrade for the Sony PSP. The downgrader makes use of a recently documented exploit found in the supposedly crack-proof firmware 2.0. After copying files to a memorystick, waiting 30 seconds, rebooting, ignoring errors and hopping up and down a 2.0 firmware PSP is reduced to a 1.50. According to reports, the procedure seems to work. Anyone out there with a PSP want to give this a try? As they say: hacker beware ;-)

Google turns 7

Google The king of search engines (in my opinion) turns seven today. Google may be considered an evil empire by many, given the number of services it’s offering and sometimes dubious business practices it employs. At least it lets me find whatever I am looking for. That’s really all that matters.

Virtual virus wreaks havoc

A mysterious infection has befallen the virtual World of Warcraft. Blizzard introduced a new dungeon into the game together with a nasty surprise. Slaying the boss at the end of the game’s level caused players to be infected with a virus. The infection should simply have caused a certain amount of damage to player’s characters. Instead, the infection was spread by the adventurers returning from their quest. Throughout the virtual world, characters suddenly died. Blizzard released a patch to fix things up, but are not entirely sure how the spread of the virual infection could have affected so many characters in the game.

rAge 2005 – just a few days to go

The annual rAge Expo is coming to the Coca Cola Dome in Northgate on Friday. Though small, this is always an interesting event to visit. There should be many gadgets on display, and hopefully a glimpse of some cool PSP stuff too!

New Pocket LOOX range

The Fujitsu-Siemens photo server contains some images and information pertaining to the new Pocket LOOX N500 series. The new devices sport the Windows Mobile 2005 operating system, more storage and a modified layout of buttons. The high-end model seems to contain a built-in GPS unit. The LOOX 720 has been the best PocketPC I’ve owned – the additional features of the N500 can only improve an already excellent device. There is little information regarding a planned release date.

South African crime statistics

The South African Police Services released the latest crime statistics for the year (2004 to 2005). It’s encouraging that there seems to be a general downward trend. Especially car hijackings have dropped dramatically. Most disturbing are the high levels of rape, cash in transit heists and violent crime. Get the report here.

NEC announces blazingly fast OCR technology

NEC and NAIST have announced software for mobile phones that is capable of scanning and recognizing text within seconds. According to the article , the new software coupled with a 1-megapixel camera held at least 20 centimetres away is capable of scanning an A4 sized page in less than 5 seconds. This produces between 21 and 35 images which the software merges together to extract the text and record any images. Copyright issues will certainly make this cool technology take even longer than the promised three years to reach the consumer market…
