GNOME 2.22
GNOME 2.22 is the latest incarnation of the GNOME desktop for Linux. I’ve been quite intrigued by the KDE 4 release, but haven’t had the heart to leave the clean, uncluttered desktop environment offered by GNOME.
The latest release enhances many features and improves usability. Providing a PhotoBooth alternative in the form of Cheese is a well-considered addition. For those systems with adequate graphics power, the Windows Compositing now includes drop shadows on windows, live previews when switching windows with Alt+Tab, and transparency effects. The new calendar with an international clock and weather is useful, and the Remote Desktop viewer will be handy for VPN work. There are some additional new features: their full description is available here. Now, it’s just some time to wait for the latest Fedora update to provide the new GNOME.
I too was very interested in the new KDE 4 release. I’ve been a Gnome user for years, but new shiny things seem to grab my attention. After trying out KDE 4 for a short time, I returned back to Gnome. Granted, there will be a learning curve to adapt to a KDE environment when all you know is Gnome, but there are trade-offs to each type of desktop environment. I found KDE to be faster than Gnome, and I found Gnome to be less “buggy” than KDE. All that aside, I am looking forward to taking the new Gnome out for a spin.
Hi Rob,
thanks for visiting! Like you, I’m a long-time GNOME user and look forward to getting my hands on the new version. I’m using KDE primarily on the Eee and don’t mind it, though it constantly reminds me of Windows XP. With the upcoming change to a different distribution on the Eee, I’ll swap over to GNOME as my preferred desktop. It’s maybe a good form of mental exercise to use different interfaces, but it does become rather confusing!
You have the Eee, I am envious! I’ve heard about them, and watched a video review or two on it, and have decided that I’m going to get one. Thought I would have to order one online, but I managed to find a shop in town that is selling them. I don’t think I’ll stick with the pre-installed Xandros; I’m leaning towards the version of Ubuntu that someone made for the Eee. How do you like the Eee?
I have the 4GB Eee and it’s really fantastic. You can see some brief comments I’ve left on the site, plus some photos but I expect you’ve read all about it. I have played around with the built-in Xandros distro up to now, but am certainly getting ready to dump it for Fedora or LinuxMint. The Eee is a great carry-everywhere device that allows you to do anything you’d ordinarily do on a system 3 times its size. Outstanding build quality by Asus and the fact that you can jack in SD cards and USB devices makes it expandable and provides more than enough storage. At the price, there is nothing with the same functionality that even comes close.
Hello everyone. This is a fine post. I visited this site accidently but now I’m going to add it to favorites. Keep up and cheers!
