Weaving Mozilla
Firefox 3.0 is a great browser, and I have installed it on all systems I run. It was with great sadness that I had to stop using Google BrowserSync, a great utility that synchronized bookmarks and history information to all browsers I used. The Google team has indicated that they will no longer support the add-on, and it does not run in the new Firefox.
In the meantime, I’ve switched over to FoxMarks and have found that to work very well. In contrast to Google BrowserSync, FoxMarks does most of its work in the background and is less intrusive.
Interesting is the new Weave add-on directly from Mozilla that will integrate tightly into the browser and will support mobile devices, too.
Weave is in the very, very early stages of development and is available (supposedly) only to developers. Nonetheless, you may try it out here (provided that link still works).
The following basic functionality is offered in this early release, with a heap more to come:
- Intelligent scheduler for synchronization to improve performance.
- Expanded set of supported browser settings and metadata, including:
- Bookmarks
- Browsing History
- Cookies
- Saved Passwords
- Saved Form Data
- Tabs
Weave is aiming to provide better control of data flowing among various browsers for the same user, as well as providing a platform for application development. To me, this looks very much like a competitor to Google Gears…
