NXT 1.1

LegoLego deserves a lot of praise for the high quality of their toys and consistent quality. In particular, their NXT robotics kit is second to none and highly recommended. Unfortunately, I bought my kit quite some time ago and the version of the enclosed software on CD for Windows and Mac is supported only on XP and the older OS X. Since G2S is my Windows system, I decided to install the NXT software there to finally get going with some robotics.

NXT softwareNo go on Vista with the NXT 1.0 version software. Of course, you can run it on Vista in XP compatibility mode, but why do that if a newer version is around for the target OS? No problem, thought I: Lego will have an update available for download. Indeed there is a new version. NXT software 1.1 is specifically designed for Vista and the new Intel-based OS X. There are even some improvements that make getting the 1.1 software worthwhile – I quote: the new NXT software offers improved performance and speed, especially for large program development. New compression methods free up 30kb of useable memory on the NXT Intelligent Brick and shrink most programs and sound files by 40%. The software programming module, called NXT-G, features intelligent scroll plus more than 100 other enhancements.

But: the software is not available for download! Instead, you’ll have to fork out USD 7 to order the CD online. That ‘s on sale from USD 20 – probably because those stingy Danes are readying NXT software 1.2 or something…

What’s more, the Online Lego Shop is available only to residents of select countries. In ZA, you’ll need to order it through some retailer and hope they get the order right.

1.1 software installation

Shame on you, Lego! LabView make their software available for free and even ship the CD with the software to anyone interested. In the meantime, you want to scrounge a measly 20 bucks from ardent fans who’ve already chipped in USD 200 or more for the bricks and NXT brain, with more sales of Technic sets and NXT accessories waiting in the wings for you! Disappointing, to say the least…
